Introduction: "no signal" means nothing

It is the most common and least useful phrase in the French telecom vocabulary. "I've got no signal." Behind those four words hide at least eight technically distinct situations, which call for entirely different checks, different remedies and different resolution times.

A phone showing zero bars because a radio site went down three kilometres away has nothing in common with a phone showing five bars that refuses to connect a call. The first is a carrier incident you can only endure and report. The second is almost always a VoLTE configuration issue, a SIM card fault or a network profile problem — in other words, fixable in a few minutes, at home, for free.

In 2026, the context makes this sorting exercise even more necessary. The gradual shutdown of 2G and 3G has removed the historic safety nets: when 4G went down five years ago, the phone quietly fell back to 3G and the call went through anyway. Today, in a growing number of areas, there is no plan B. Add ageing handset fleets, software updates that reset settings, and 5G densification works causing planned outages: the possible causes of failure have multiplied.

This guide lays out an ordered diagnostic method, from the most likely to the rarest, with the official tools to test each hypothesis.

Step 1: distinguish the four main families of symptoms

Before touching anything, describe precisely what is not working. This is the step everyone skips, and it is the one that saves the most time.

One simple rule: if only a single service is broken (calls, or data, or texts) while the others work, the failure is almost never a global network incident. A mast going down takes everything with it at once. A broken setting, on the other hand, only breaks one building block.

Step 2: check whether it's just you or everyone

This is the cheapest question to settle, and plenty of people forget it.

The second-phone test. Ask someone around you, ideally on a different carrier, whether their connection is working. If everyone on Orange is cut off but the neighbour on Bouygues Telecom has normal service, you have isolated the problem in ten seconds.

The moved-SIM test. Put your SIM into another phone. If the problem follows the card, it's the SIM or the line. If it stays on the device, it's the handset. This single test eliminates half the hypotheses. For micro-SIMs and nano-SIMs, a small steel SIM ejector tool saves you from mangling an unbent paperclip in your phone's tray — and, above all, from damaging the mechanism.

Official coverage maps. Arcep publishes the Mon réseau mobile tool (monreseaumobile.arcep.fr), which shows theoretical coverage and quality-of-service measurements per carrier, down to municipal level. It does not display real-time outages, but it answers an essential question: is this location supposed to be covered by my carrier? If the answer is "limited coverage", the problem is not an outage, it is a structural grey zone — and the remedy is not the same.

Carrier incident pages. Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile all publish a network status page, generally accessible from the customer account area and sometimes searchable by postcode. They are conservative: an incident often appears only after internal confirmation, sometimes several hours later. Useful, but never sufficient on its own.

Step 3: the fixes that solve the majority of cases

Once a collective incident has been ruled out, move on to individual checks. In order, from least to most invasive.

Rebooting, but done properly

Powering the phone off and on again forces it to run a full network attachment procedure. This resolves cases where the handset has stayed "latched" onto a saturated cell or one undergoing maintenance. A simple ten-second airplane mode toggle is not always enough: go for a complete shutdown, thirty seconds' wait, then power back on.

The VoLTE setting, cause number one of failed calls in 2026

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is no longer a comfort option: with the shutdown of 2G and 3G, it has become the only path for a call across a growing share of the country. Yet this setting silently switches itself off in several situations: after a major system update, after a SIM card change, or on an imported handset whose firmware is not certified by the French carrier.

Look in your mobile settings for an entry named "VoLTE calls", "4G/5G calling" or "HD Voice" and check that it is enabled. If the option is missing even though your plan is recent, it is often a sign of a non-approved handset — an issue affecting many devices bought outside French retail channels.

Network selection mode

On almost every smartphone, carrier selection is set to "automatic" by default. An accidental switch to manual, common after a trip abroad, leaves the phone hunting for a network that doesn't exist where you are. Switch back to automatic, then reboot.

Resetting network settings

Available on both iOS and Android, this function erases saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings and mobile data profiles, then rebuilds them cleanly. It is the classic remedy for failures that appear right after a system update. Write down your Wi-Fi passwords first.

Step 4: when the SIM card is the culprit

We forget about it because it never moves, but a physical SIM card is an electronic component with exposed gold contacts. It ages, it oxidises, and a ten-year-old SIM in a phone carried around every day eventually produces baffling intermittent disconnections.

Signs pointing to the SIM:

  • random dropouts followed by spontaneous reconnection;
  • "Invalid SIM" or "Insert a SIM card" messages appearing intermittently;
  • a fault that follows the card when it is moved to another phone;
  • degraded operation that improves after simply removing and reinserting the card.

Replacing a SIM is free or costs a few euros with every French carrier, and can be done in-store or by post. An electronic contact cleaning wipe can extend the life of an oxidised card, but it will never fix a chip that is genuinely worn out.

eSIMs are a different matter: no physical contact, so no mechanical wear, but profiles that can become corrupted after restoring a backup or switching handsets. Having the carrier reissue the profile resolves nearly all such cases.

Step 5: telling an outage apart from plain poor coverage

This is the most common confusion, and the one that poisons conversations with customer support.

An outage is a temporary malfunction of equipment that was working the day before. Insufficient coverage is a permanent state: the location has never been properly served, and it won't be tomorrow either.

To settle the question, ask yourself three things:

  1. Did it work in this same spot a week ago?
  2. Does the problem disappear if you walk two hundred metres?
  3. Are other subscribers on the same carrier, in the same place, having the same trouble?

Three "yes" answers point to a network incident. Three "no" answers point to a poorly covered area — and there, the solutions are of a different order: Wi-Fi calling (VoWiFi), a femtocell supplied by the carrier, or switching carriers after consulting Arcep's measurements.

Indoors, thick walls, thermally insulating glazing and metal structures heavily attenuate the signal. An approved mobile repeater, supplied by the carrier itself, remains the only legal option: amplifiers sold freely online are, in the vast majority of cases, illegal in France. ANFR regularly points out that installing a non-approved repeater exposes you to penalties, because it disrupts the network for the entire neighbourhood.

In the meantime, a far simpler solution exists if you have Wi-Fi: enable Wi-Fi calling in your settings. It routes voice and texts over your home router, often with better quality than 4G. The router still needs to be well placed, though: a well-positioned mesh Wi-Fi extender will change your life far more than any "signal boost" gadget.

Step 6: reporting the problem and asserting your rights

Once the cause has been identified as the carrier's responsibility, the French procedure is clearly mapped out.

Customer service first

This is a mandatory stage: no external appeal is admissible unless you have first contacted the carrier. Always note the date, the time, the name of the person you spoke to and the case number. These details will be required at the next step.

The consumer relations department, then the mediator

If customer service has not solved the problem, the next rung is the carrier's consumer relations department, in writing and preferably by registered mail. Without a satisfactory answer within two months, you can refer the case free of charge to the Médiateur des communications électroniques, whose services are open to any private subscriber or business with fewer than ten employees.

"J'alerte l'Arcep"

Arcep has launched the J'alerte l'Arcep platform (jalerte.arcep.fr), relayed by public services including economie.gouv.fr. One important point that is often misunderstood: Arcep does not settle your individual dispute and will not get you a refund. The regulator aggregates reports to detect systemic malfunctions and, where appropriate, open proceedings against a carrier.

Reporting to Arcep is not something you do for yourself, it is something you do for everyone. But it is also what feeds the statistics that subsequently push carriers to fix things.

Arcep has, moreover, announced tighter requirements on network resilience by 2030: fewer incidents, restoration obligations, greater transparency on outages. The regulator also published the source code of its Mon réseau mobile tool in 2026, a rare gesture of transparency in the sector.

Compensation

In the event of a prolonged service interruption, each carrier's terms and conditions provide for rebate mechanisms. They are almost never automatic: you have to ask, specifying the exact dates of unavailability. In practice, a goodwill gesture proportional to the length of the outage is the norm once the carrier acknowledges the fault.

What to keep within reach

A network outage rarely happens at a convenient moment. A few simple preparations radically change the experience:

  • A backup means of communication. If your calls won't go through but Wi-Fi works, you can still send a text from a free web service, or reach your family via an internet messaging app. Think about it before you get cut off.
  • A power bank. Constantly searching for a network drains a smartphone in a few hours. A USB-C power bank stops you from being left with no network and no battery at the same time.
  • Emergency numbers memorised. 112 works on any available network, even without a valid SIM and even outside your own carrier's network. 114 lets you reach the emergency services by text, an essential service for deaf and hard-of-hearing people.
  • A note of your credentials. Customer account login, PUK code, RIO code: written down in advance, they get you out of trouble when the phone itself can no longer retrieve them.

In summary: the crisis checklist

  1. Qualify the symptom: calls, data or texts? One of them or all of them?
  2. Check with another subscriber, first on the same carrier, then on another.
  3. Consult the carrier's network status page and Mon réseau mobile.
  4. Reboot completely, check VoLTE and automatic network selection.
  5. Move the SIM into another phone to identify the guilty party.
  6. Reset network settings if the fault appeared after an update.
  7. Enable Wi-Fi calling as an immediate fallback.
  8. Open a case with customer service, then the mediator, then J'alerte l'Arcep.

Most readers who follow this sequence will never reach step 8: in practice, half of all "outages" are resolved between steps 4 and 6. It's frustrating to discover that after three days without a signal — and that is precisely why it's better to know beforehand.
