Orange exceeded a connectivity score of 80 at most French stage towns: Bordeaux (87), Dole (87), Mulhouse (88), Pau (85), and Paris (86). The operator fell below 70 at only four of the 33 French locations analyzed — a remarkable result given the route's geographic diversity.

The metric used, the Speedtest Connectivity Score, is calculated on a 100-point scale combining speed (50%), video streaming quality (25%), and web browsing (25%).

Barcelona: The Best Connectivity Baseline of the Race

The Grand Départ from Barcelona provides the highest connectivity baseline of the entire edition, with a route quality score of 96. Dense urban coverage and competition among five Spanish operators explain this strong performance. Movistar leads in Barcelona (83), followed closely by Orange (82) and DIGI (81).

Conditions deteriorate quickly after the race crosses into France. By Stage 4, scores drop into the low 70s and continue declining across central France.

Rural France: The Real Weak Spot for Operators

Contrary to expectations, the most problematic areas are not the Alps or the Pyrenees, but central and southwestern France. The corridor covering Stages 8 to 14 consistently records route quality scores between 59 and 68.

Stage 8 (Périgueux → Bergerac) records a score of 61, and Stage 9 (Malemort → Ussel) delivers the lowest score of the entire Tour at 59. At Bergerac, Orange holds 84 points, while SFR drops to 60 and Bouygues Telecom to 62.

Free Mobile and Bouygues Telecom: Gaps in Difficult Terrain

Free Mobile records the weakest performance among the four operators, scoring just 50 at Les Angles and 58 at Orcières-Merlette. The operator's lack of 800 MHz spectrum remains a structural disadvantage in rural and mountainous areas, despite investments in 700 MHz and 3.5 GHz frequencies.

Bouygues Telecom also experiences sharp performance drops in difficult terrain, scoring 52 at Gavarnie-Gèdre and 53 at Thoiry. The operator performs well in cities (Bordeaux 87, Pau 85, Orcières-Merlette 89) but coverage collapses in the most remote locations.

SFR occupies the middle ground, supported by 30 MHz of low-band spectrum and 80 MHz of 3.5 GHz holdings. It leads at Les Angles (82) but struggles in the Dordogne region, falling to 60 at Bergerac.

Massive Temporary Infrastructure Required

The Tour de France demands extraordinary telecom logistics. Unlike a stadium event, connectivity requirements move daily across distances ranging from 19.7 km (opening time trial) to 205 km (Dole–Belfort stage).

Orange historically deploys around 40 temporary mobile relay sites along the route and increases backhaul capacity to absorb traffic peaks. In 2022, the operator recorded 32 million connections during the single Briançon–Alpe d'Huez stage alone, and handled more than 100,000 calls in under an hour at Mont Ventoux in 2021.
