Introduction: €380, or €69

The screen cracked diagonally against the edge of the kerb. The phone still works, the touchscreen responds everywhere except along a two-centimetre strip at the bottom right — exactly where the space bar sits. In store, the sales adviser is adamant: "At that repair price, you might as well take a subsidised handset; we'll give you €380 off with a €34.99 plan over 24 months."

Let's do the sum nobody does at the counter: €34.99 × 24 = €839.76, versus an equivalent plan at €12 with a no-contract operator, i.e. €288 over the same period. The gap is €551. Replacing the screen, meanwhile, costs between €69 and €180 depending on the model, and up to €25 less with the repair bonus.

Since 2024-2025, French and European regulations have decisively shifted the balance in favour of repair: a durability index, an obligation to supply spare parts for seven years, an extended legal warranty after repair, removable batteries on the horizon. These rights exist, they are rarely explained in store, and they completely change the repair-or-replace calculation. This guide puts them in order.

Step 1: Work out what's actually broken

Before requesting any quote, an honest diagnosis saves you from paying for an unnecessary repair. Three faults account for the vast majority of cases.

The battery that no longer holds a charge

By far the most common fault — and the easiest to mistake for "my phone is too old". A lithium-ion battery generally loses 20% of its capacity after 500 to 800 full charge cycles, which is two to three years of normal use.

Check its actual condition before doing anything:

  • iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Below 80% maximum capacity, replacement is justified.
  • Android: Settings → Battery → Usage, or the dialler code *#*#4636#*#* on some models. Battery analysis apps give a finer estimate across several cycles.

A battery replacement generally costs between €40 and €90, repair bonus deducted. It's the intervention with the best benefit-to-cost ratio: it often gives two more years of battery life to a device that is otherwise perfectly functional.

The cracked screen

Draw a clear distinction between two things: the glass (the protective cover) and the panel (the display itself, LCD or OLED). A surface crack that affects neither the display nor the touchscreen can wait — but it compromises water resistance and lets in dust and moisture. A simple tempered glass screen protector fitted on top limits the spread of the chips and prevents cuts while you wait for the repair.

If the display shows ink blotches, vertical lines or dead touch zones, the panel itself is damaged: repair becomes necessary.

Connectors and sound

A phone that no longer charges doesn't necessarily have a broken port. In most cases, it's pocket lint compacted at the bottom of the connector. Before requesting any quote, switch the device off and gently clear the port with a wooden toothpick or a connector cleaning kit — never a metal object. The same goes for a speaker that has gone muffled: the grille clogs up.

Common-sense rule: a problem that appears gradually is often mechanical or software-related; a problem that appears abruptly after a drop or contact with water is hardware-related.

Step 2: The durability index, the new compass

Since 7 January 2025, the former repairability index has been replaced for smartphones by the durability index, provided for by the "anti-waste for a circular economy" law (the AGEC law) and detailed by the Climate and Resilience law. It is displayed on product sheets in stores and online, as a score out of 10.

Its difference from the old index matters: it no longer assesses only how easy the device is to take apart, but also:

  • the reliability of the device (resistance to drops, water and dust);
  • how long software and security updates remain available;
  • the price and availability of spare parts;
  • the ease of disassembly and the type of fastenings used.

In practice, a model scoring 8/10 will have parts available, a screen replaceable with a few screws and long-term software support. A model at 5/10 will be glued shut, with rare and expensive parts. This index is worth consulting before buying, but also after a mishap: it tells you immediately whether the repair will be straightforward or whether the quote is going to spiral.

On top of this comes the European regulation on smartphone ecodesign, applicable since 20 June 2025, which requires manufacturers to supply spare parts for at least seven years after a model stops being sold, and to guarantee a minimum of five years of security updates. The practical consequence: a phone bought in 2026 will remain repairable and secure into the early 2030s.

Step 3: The repair bonus, €90 on the table

The repair bonus, funded by the sector's accredited eco-organisation (Ecosystem) and overseen by the Ministry for Ecological Transition, is an immediate discount deducted from the bill at a repairer certified QualiRépar.

Following successive increases to the scale:

Type of repairIndicative bonus amount
Smartphone screen€25
Smartphone battery€25
Charging connector€25
Motherboard / complex faultup to €50
Tablet (screen)€45

Three conditions to bear in mind:

  1. The device must be out of warranty (no legal warranty in force, no commercial warranty, no insurance that would cover it).
  2. The repairer must be QualiRépar-certified: the official directory is available on the eco-organisation's website.
  3. The deduction is immediate on the quote — you don't pay up front and there's no paperwork to fill in.

The bonus doesn't cover everything, but on a battery billed at €65, a €25 discount is 38% of the cost. It is very rarely offered spontaneously: ask for it explicitly.

Step 4: What if it's still under warranty?

Many paid-for repairs shouldn't be. Three protections stack up in France.

The legal warranty of conformity (2 years)

Provided for by the Consumer Code, it applies to any new goods sold by a professional, at no extra cost. For 24 months, any defect that appears is presumed to have existed since delivery: it's up to the seller to prove otherwise, not up to you to prove anything.

It covers: a battery degrading abnormally fast, a screen with dead pixels, a faulty camera sensor, a network module losing 4G. It does not cover accidental breakage or water damage.

Two points often overlooked, arising from the AGEC law:

  • If you invoke the legal warranty and the item is repaired, the warranty is extended by 6 months.
  • If the item is replaced, a new 2-year warranty starts from scratch.

The warranty against hidden defects

It runs for 2 years from the discovery of the defect, not from the purchase, within a limit of 20 years after the sale. It is harder to invoke (you have to prove the defect), but it remains the only recourse for a design flaw that appears after three or four years.

The operator's mobile insurance

Taken out in store, it often costs €7 to €13 a month with an excess of €50 to €150 per claim. Do the maths: €10 × 24 months = €240, plus a €90 excess, for a screen repair worth €130. In the vast majority of cases, the insurance costs more than the repair it covers. Also check your premium bank card and your multi-risk home insurance: they sometimes already include cover for a broken or stolen phone, and paying twice is common.

Step 5: DIY repair, a viable but demanding route

The right to repair has opened up the sale of genuine spare parts to consumers. Several manufacturers now supply screens, batteries and connectors directly, and specialist platforms provide guides and tools.

What's genuinely within reach of a careful DIYer:

  • Battery: medium difficulty, 30 to 60 minutes, provided you can handle removing the adhesive.
  • Screen: high difficulty on glued models, with a risk of tearing a ribbon cable.
  • Back cover, charging port: highly variable depending on the model.

The minimum kit fits in a box: a precision screwdriver set (Torx, Pentalobe, Phillips), plastic picks, a suction cup and a heating pad to soften the glue. One detail everyone forgets: electrostatic discharge. An antistatic wrist strap connected to earth costs a few euros and stops you silently frying a component that was working perfectly well.

Three serious warnings:

  1. Back up first. A botched repair can make your data inaccessible.
  2. Water resistance is lost from the very first disassembly, unless all the seals are replaced.
  3. On some models, a non-paired part triggers warning messages or disables features (Face ID, True Tone, battery health monitoring). Check this before ordering.

Step 6: The repair-or-replace decision

Here's the honest decision grid.

SituationSensible decision
Worn battery, device < 5 years old, updates still providedRepair — best cost/benefit ratio
Cracked screen, device < 3 years old, mid- or high-endRepair — especially with the repair bonus
Cracked screen, entry-level model bought for €129 four years agoWeigh it up: the quote often exceeds the residual value
Motherboard dead, widespread water damageReplace — refurbished or new
Device that hasn't received security updates for 2 yearsReplace — the risk is to your data

That last point deserves emphasis. A phone without security patches is still a device hosting your banking verification texts, your messaging apps and your accounts. Indefinitely prolonging the life of a device abandoned by its manufacturer isn't environmentalism, it's taking a risk.

And what about the mobile plan?

That's the crux of the matter. The "€1 handset" never existed: it's funded by an overpriced plan spread over 24 months. Repairing your current device also means breaking that cycle and regaining the freedom to choose a no-contract plan.

The sequence that works:

  1. Get the device repaired (with the repair bonus if eligible).
  2. Compare no-contract plans with equivalent usage.
  3. Keep your number thanks to the RIO, obtained free of charge by calling 3179 from your line.
  4. Number portability takes 1 to 3 working days, and it's the new operator that cancels the old contract on your behalf.

If your device is repaired but its battery life is still tight when you're out and about, a 10,000 mAh power bank costs less than one month of a subsidised plan and solves the problem without changing hardware. And to stop history repeating itself, a reinforced protective case with shock-absorbing corners very concretely cuts the number of cracked screens — it's the accessory with the highest return on investment in this entire article.

Key takeaways

  • The battery is the most common fault and the cheapest to fix: check its capacity before concluding that your phone is "done for".
  • The durability index, mandatory since January 2025, tells you in advance whether a model will be repairable and supported for a long time.
  • The repair bonus takes €25 to €50 off the bill at a QualiRépar repairer — you have to ask for it.
  • The 2-year legal warranty of conformity is free, presumes the defect was there from the start, and is extended by 6 months after a repair.
  • Manufacturers must supply spare parts for 7 years and 5 years of security updates.
  • A device that no longer receives patches should be replaced, whatever its physical condition.
